Eileen - Aha

The major "Aha" moment that I have gotten from this class is ways to check-in and track progress.  Reading responses is becoming  a part of my monthly routine.  I am also starting to track students better as they read. Although I'm still not finding enough 1:1 time with kiddos, I'm more aware of individuals during small groups. This is something I had stepped away from because I just couldn't find a system that worked for me.  All tracking was occurring in my head!  I feel re-energized that this can be done efficiently.  Both of these progress monitoring system is giving me a better understanding of my students as readers.

  1. Eileen,
I have to say that doing reading responses, with my students has become one of my favorite parts of my literacy program. (Now I need to be careful not to over use it, and neglect other pieces, lol.) I appreciate learning about conferencing with students, hearing about what others are doing and building more of this into my readers workshop time with students. I too am feeling energized about all of the different ways to track and ultimately better support individual children.

  2. Hi Eileen!!
I must say I have to agree with you. Before this class I was really struggling to find a system that worked for me in terms of conferences and monitoring progress. I felt badly not giving each student the time to show what they know. I think this class has been so helpful because we have been exposed to suggestions and ideas that have worked well for others and we can learn from our fellow educators to better our teaching :) I am glad you found a system that works for you and I would love to hear about it sometime!
