Laurie ---Really!?---

I have been using Lucy's approach to both reading and writing for 2-3 years and each year I am learning something new and adding new pieces to my ELA teaching time.  I have gotten much better at keeping my connection and teaching point really short so that I can focus more time on the Active Engagement and Conferring time.  I also know the units well enough that I am able to add bits and pieces of my own that I find necessary in teaching the students that I have.  I think that each time I teach a session I find new pieces in the lesson that I enjoy or don't like at all.  There is a lot in each session so I feel okay if I don't do every piece of the session/lesson.  I look forward to continuing with Lucy's approach and finding and using different ways to help each child be successful.

  1. Laurie,

I want to say that your post really helped calm me down about the units. Although I have been teaching the writing units since last year, this is my first time with the reading units. I like how you stated "...I feel okay if I don't do every piece of the session/lesson." Although I am trying to do it all, I am currently working on cutting down the time I take during the mini lessons. One step at a time!

  2. Thanks for reassuring us that it is ok not to do every little bit. At the end of last year, my first year using the UOS, I finally realized it was ok not to do everything. The point is to be quick, focused, and clear in your teaching.

  3. I think the time study may show why doing it all just isn't possible. The NY classrooms where a lot of this research is done have much longer blocks of literacy time and not as many specials and recess times in their day. Don't beat yourselves up!
